8 SEO Mistakes Indian Websites Keep Making in 2026

India has millions of business websites competing for organic traffic. The good news is that most of them are making the same fixable mistakes. Here are the eight that show up most consistently in SEO audits of Indian sites.

1. Targeting Keywords Nobody Searches For

A website optimized for "best digital marketing company in Pune that provides holistic solutions for startups" will rank for a phrase nobody types. Effective keyword targeting requires actual search volume data, not logical assumptions about how customers phrase things. Use Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner, or any paid keyword tool to verify actual search volume before building content around a term.

2. Duplicate or Missing Meta Titles and Descriptions

Every page on your site should have a unique meta title (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155 characters) that accurately describes that page's content and includes relevant keywords. Crawl your site with Screaming Frog (free for up to 500 URLs) and look for duplicates, missing tags, or tags that are too long.

3. Ignoring Core Web Vitals

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), and INP (Interaction to Next Paint) directly affect where you rank. Most Indian websites, particularly those built on bloated WordPress themes, fail Core Web Vitals on mobile. Check your scores in Google Search Console under "Experience."

4. No Internal Linking Strategy

Internal links help Google understand your site structure and distribute authority across pages. Many Indian websites have homepage links, navigation links, and almost no other internal links. Every blog post should link to relevant service pages. Service pages should link to relevant case studies. This is free and valuable.

5. Thin or Duplicate Content

A services page with 100 words describing what you do tells Google almost nothing. A location-targeting page that is copied from another page with only the city name changed is flagged as duplicate content. Both problems result in poor rankings. Service pages should be comprehensive, specific, and unique for each service and location.

6. No Google Business Profile

For any business serving a local or regional market, Google Business Profile is often more valuable than website SEO for local searches. "Web design agency Pune" searches often surface Business Profile results above organic website results. Many Indian businesses have outdated, unclaimed, or missing Business Profiles.

7. Ignoring Structured Data

JSON-LD schema markup helps Google understand your content and can unlock rich result features (star ratings, FAQ snippets, event information) that increase click-through rates significantly. For service businesses in India, LocalBusiness and Service schema are the highest-priority types to implement.

8. Not Building Any Backlinks

Content quality matters, but links from other sites remain one of Google's most important ranking signals. Indian businesses often publish content and expect it to rank without any link building effort. Getting mentioned in industry publications, building partnerships with complementary businesses, and creating genuinely useful resources that attract links are all effective approaches.

Priority order for most Indian sites: Fix technical issues first (Core Web Vitals, duplicate tags, crawl errors). Then create better content for existing pages. Then build links. In that order.
