Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics in 2023. If you are still running on an old setup, you are likely missing data or measuring the wrong things. Here is how to set up GA4 correctly for an Indian business website.
Why GA4 Is Different From the Old Analytics
GA4 is event-based rather than session-based. Instead of counting page views and sessions as primary metrics, it tracks individual user events (page_view, scroll, click, form_submit, purchase). This gives you more flexibility to track what matters to your business, but requires more intentional setup than the old version.
Step 1: Create Your GA4 Property
- Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your Google account
- Click Admin (gear icon) and then "Create Property"
- Enter your property name, reporting time zone (India Standard Time), and currency (Indian Rupee)
- Select your industry and business size
- Choose your business goals (generates the right reports for your use case)
Step 2: Add the Tracking Code to Your Website
GA4 uses the Google tag (gtag.js). You have two options:
- Google Tag Manager (recommended): Install GTM on your site, then add a GA4 Configuration tag inside GTM. This lets you manage all tracking from one place without touching code for every change
- Direct code installation: Copy the gtag.js snippet from your GA4 property and paste it into the head of every page on your site
Step 3: Configure Key Events
GA4 automatically tracks some events (page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, file downloads, video plays). You need to manually configure conversions for what matters to your business:
- Form submissions: Mark the thank-you page view or the form_submit event as a conversion
- Phone calls: Track clicks on phone number links as conversions
- WhatsApp clicks: Track outbound link clicks to wa.me as conversions
- Purchases: Ecommerce tracking requires additional code or plugin setup
Step 4: Link to Google Search Console
Linking GA4 to Search Console shows you which organic search queries bring traffic to which pages. This is invaluable for SEO. Go to Admin, then Property Settings, then Service Links to connect the two properties.
Step 5: Set Up Key Reports
GA4's default reports may not be what you need. Set up these custom reports in the Explore section:
- Traffic source report: Which channels (organic, paid, social, direct, referral) drive your conversions
- Landing page performance: Which pages users enter on and whether they convert
- Device breakdown: Desktop vs mobile traffic and conversion rate differences
- Geographic report: Which Indian states and cities send the most valuable traffic
Common mistake: Setting up GA4 and never looking at it. Schedule 30 minutes every week to review your top metrics. The data only creates value when someone acts on it.
What to Check First After Setup
- Realtime view shows active users immediately after installation
- Events report shows page_view and session events within 24-48 hours
- Your conversion events are marked as conversions and showing in reports
- Traffic sources are attributed correctly (not all showing as direct)
